Depending on your point of view, the apotheosis of Metallica was either Master of Puppets, And Justice For All..., or the black album. Taking the middle one there as the mid-point, and taking this song as the high point of that album, which one should, we may have the very high point of Metallica here.

And that is saying a very great deal. Quite simply, this song is uniquely brilliant and powerful. The lyrics are earnest and furious, the guitars are lean and very mean, the drumline and rhythm and bar interchange are nothing short of stunning. The build-up is exquisite. And the pay-off pretty sublime.

The song just drips energy and aggression - and seemingly never gets old. We'll be working out to this song until the day we keel over from it.
